Con Edison Earns Newsweek ‘Green’ Honors
Con Edison has been cited in Newsweek magazine’s Green Rankings 2009 as one of the most environmentally friendly utility companies in the United States. The news magazine praised Con Edison for its aggressive efforts to control electricity demand and its innovations with the electrical grid.

Among utilities, Con Edison received the fifth highest “environmental impact” score in the rankings compiled with the help of experts selected by Newsweek. The company received the sixth highest “green” score. The rankings are in the magazine’s September 28 issue.

Con Edison’s environmental achievements are extensive and varied. This year the company met its goal of having 100 hybrid vehicles in its fleet, has been installing white roofs on its buildings to combat global warming, and recently began a smart grid pilot project in Queens to help customers use electricity more wisely.

Con Edison was recently named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for North America. Earlier this year, Innovest ranked Con Edison second in North America in the multi-utilities category for environmental and social performance. More recently, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) ranked Con Edison the number-one utility in a measurement of companies’ climate-change performance actions. Con Edison received dual seventh-place rankings in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index’s (CDLI) S&P 500 utility and global utility categories.
